Jícara Ancestral Remedies, from the DMV, is reclaiming ancestral practices by putting forth artisanal cacao and kombucha beverages. Or, should we call them healthful solutions?

Cacao is unrefined cocoa which means it holds its full nutritional integrity when compared to processed chocolate. Cacao is considered a superfood and has many incredible healing properties, such as high volumes of calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, fibre, and loads of antioxidants. It is also a mental health booster with a powerful mix of beneficial natural compounds, including: serotonin, endorphins, phenylethylamine, tryptophan, and anandamide. 

Jícara cacao is a delicious, remedial drink that is brewed with cacao powder and a variety of spices. Drinking cacao originates in Mayan communities in present day Guatemala around 1900 BCE. Our cacao is prepared in a traditional style with organic cacao that many Indigenous and Caribbean communities practice today. This delicious drink is completely caffeine free and is an excellent coffee alternative. Kombucha is effervescent fermented tea and acts as an incredible gut remedy! It is packed with probiotics which aid in strengthening the digestive tract and immune system. Kombucha’s origins can be dated back to 221 BCE, China, where it was known as the “Tea of Immortality”. Kombucha is now drunk worldwide and its popularity is not just a testimony of its health benefits but yummy taste! 

Jícara kombucha is made with traditional Chinese Pu’er tea. Our tea is sourced from an organic Pu’er farm in Yunnan, China. Only 27 trees of this caliber still exist in China. As a result of the industry trying to meet global demands, agricultural practices have been watered down. Pu’er itself has many medicinal effects including: improving heart health, reducing cholesterol, stimulating blood circulation, and soothing hangovers!

In February 2017 Forbes Magazine published a rather comprehensive historical, political (of course) and economic (historical and future-projected) review of Kombucha. Kombucha 101: Demystifying The Past, Present And Future Of The Fermented Tea Drink cites Northeast China, historically called Manchuria, around 220 B.C. attributing the name Kombucha to Korean physician, Dr. Kombu, who brought the fermented tea to Japan for Emperor Inkyo. 

In summary: Over the past 21+ centuries kombucha has been introduced to global consumers traveling along the earliest known international trade routes. The fermented tea has gone in and out of vogue. It has been appropriated. It has been a regulated substance. Now - it is a significant portion of the global beverage economy. It is worth $1.8B  in the United States, Cacao is valued at $9.94B. 

Jícara Remedies is showing up with a specific, culturally significant, approach to brewing cacao and kombucha while funneling dollars back into the hands of cultural origin.
