Community Art Build 2023

  • Selina Union Market 411 New York Avenue Northeast Washington, DC, 20002 United States (map)

Join the creative visionaries + artists of Femme Fatale DC at Selina Union Market for their latest interactive community art project.

We’ll be creating a large-scale piece of collaborative art to hang in the Cleveland Park shop!

This year, creative director Adriana teamed with artist Meg Schaap to dream up a collective quilt. Inspired by the mosaic-like work of Gustav Klimt’s painting “The Virgin”, Meg imagined the quilt around the girl in the painting as a story of evolution through our ages from child to adult and the transformation of womanhood through the ages.

It’s also about the beauty and symbolism of quilting. Something that runs deep and connects to many of our ancestral lines. Quilts represent heritage, safety + warmth, and collaboration.

Women used to gather as they worked on their individual quilt squares, sharing fabric and stories as they wove together something bigger than their individual pieces.

That's the spirit we're calling in with this art installation: the beauty of how separate ideas + bits come together in a cohesive way to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Here's what to expect on the day of the build:

✨ You'll get a square of wire grid and upcycled/thrifted fabrics to choose from

✨ Decorate your square in a way that represents and inspires you

✨ At the end of the day, the squares will move to the shop, where Adriana and Meg will weave them together in a final display for everyone to enjoy!
